Immunization Requirements
Immunization Requirements
Immunization Requirements
All children are required to have their vaccinations fully completed/up to date before enrolling in grades K- 6th unless exempted as provided by law.
Exemptions based on personal/religious beliefs are no longer an option for vaccines required for school entry in California. Personal/religious beliefs exemptions on file for a child already attending child care or school will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at kindergarten (including transitional kindergarten) or 7th grade.
Starting January 1, 2021, medical exemptions, either permanent or temporary, can only be issued through the California Immunization Registry - Medical Exemption website (CAIR-ME) by physicians licensed in California. Schools may only accept new medical exemptions that are issued using CAIR-ME.
Enrollment paperwork will not be accepted without complete immunization records showing that the student meets California school admission requirements.
For more information about SB 277, please see https://www.shotsforschool.org.
For more information about school immunization requirements and resources, please visit the California Department of Health website at www.shotsforschool.org or contact your local health department or county office of education.
Required Immunizations
Required Immunizations
Please be aware of the immunizations that are required before your child may enroll. Please review your child's immunization record to determine what immunizations he/she is missing. The boosters that are traditionally given at age five years may be given after 4 years of age. Even if your child turns five after August of the enrolling year, immunizations must be completed before they can enroll. Two doses of the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine are also required for kindergarten entry.Your child's enrollment paperwork will not be accepted until all required immunizations are completed.
The following are the required immunizations for school entry:
- Polio: 4 doses, but three are enough if at least one was given after the 4th birthday
- DTP/DtaP: 5 doses, but 4 are enough if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday
- MMR: 2 doses, both must be on or after the 1st birthday
- Hepatitis B: 3 doses
- Varicella: 2 doses.
- For children who have had varicella/chickenpox, an immunization record that indicates a "history of chickenpox disease" is not sufficient documentation to meet school requirements. A medical exemption must be provided if 2 doses of this immunization have not been administered.
Kindergarten Dental Exams
Kindergarten Dental Exams
In addition to the above immunizations, California law, Education Code Section 49452.8, now requires that your child have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school. Assessments that have happened within the 12 months before your child enters school also meet this requirement. The law specifies that the assessment must be done by a licensed California dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional. The Del Mar Union School District asks that the oral health exam be completed before starting kindergarten.
When you register your kindergartner you will be asked for your child's immunization card and the Oral Health Assessment/Waiver Request. If the oral health exam has not been completed prior to registration, then you must turn in the form as soon as it is completed. Please contact the Health office at your school if you have any questions.

SDUHSD Immunization Requirements
All students entering 7th through 12th grades are required to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap. For more information go to "Shots for School," a California website about immunizations required for school entry.
